Longtime traveling is very different from vacationing. If you have a week out of the whole year for enjoying, relaxing and fun, it should be really relaxing and fun. In this case, you don’t really want to cook, but you want to go to restaurants, you really want to have the best location for your accommodation and somebody to take care of you.

Dlhodobé cestovanie je vo veľa veciach úplne iné, ako dovolenka. Ak máte týždeň v celom roku, kedy si môžete užiť oddych a zábavu, mal by to byť oddych a zábava. Vtedy sa Vám naozaj nechce variť, ale chcete ísť do reštaurácie. Vtedy naozaj chcete tú najlepšiu pozíciu ubytovania a niekoho, kto sa o Vás postará.

When you are traveling for a long time and have no real responsibilities, saving money by cooking and staying in less fancy accommodations seem like fine ways to get a better price. I think the best way is to find a compromise between a cheap price and comfort. So I will tell you something about the way how I am choosing my accommodation.

Keď cestujete dlhodobo a nemáte takmer žiadnu zodpovednosť, varenie alebo skromnejšie ubytko na úkor ušetrených peňazí je fajn. Myslím si, že nájsť kompromis medzi cenou a pohodlím, je tá najlepšia kombinácia. Poviem Vám teda niečo o tom, ako vyberám ja.

Airbnb & Booking

The first thing I do is open the two most famous platforms, Airbnb and Booking and I check accommodation and sort by price to see the cheapest without any criteria. According to this I get picture of the price situation in that area and then I add things like breakfast, swimming pool or position close to the city center and I see how the price changes.

Prvé, čo vždy urobím, otvorím dve najznámejšie platformy, Airbnb a Booking. Najskôr si zobrazím ubytká v danej oblasti od najlacnejšieho, bez akýkoľvek kritérií. Takto dostanem obraz o tom, kde sa pohybujú ceny. Potom začnem trochu prihadzovať na požiadavkách, raňajky, bazén, poloha v centre a pozorujem, či sa mení cena, poprípade koľko.

If we are moving more often, so I am choosing accommodation for shorter times, like for example in Vietnam, I prefer to have at least breakfast included. I feel a lot more comfortable when I don’t have to think about where to go and what to eat first thing in the morning. To have breakfast usually doesn’t make it more expensive, it maybe just cuts options down a little bit.

Keď sa častejšie presúvame, teda vyberám ubytko na kratšiu dobu, ako napríklad vo Vietname, snažím sa zvoliť s raňajkami. Zdá sa mi to oveľa pohodlnejšie, keď nemusím hneď ráno rozmýšľať nad tým, kam ísť a čo vybrať. Raňajky väčšinou cenu nezvýšia, možno len zúžia výber.

AIRBNB

If we want to have something nicer, I am using Airbnb credit 28 €. Or better to say if I want to have nicer!  David really doesn’t care where he sleeps. His dad once said, he could sleep next to the road, but it’s not ok to do it with me anymore. 🙂 If you want to use this credit, the price has to be at least 70 € / trip, it has to be your first reservation through Airbnb and you cannot combine it with other discounts. There are a lot of articles about the morality of using this discount more than once. I think huge companies like Airbnb or Booking have enough money that one discount for you will not kill them, so why not to save a little bit of your money.

Ak si chceme dopriať niečo krajšie, využívam Airbnb kredit 28 €. Alebo skôr ak ja chcem niečo krajšie, Davidovi je to celkom jedno, ako jeho otec raz povedal, on by sa vyspal aj v škáre vedľa cesty, no so mnou také niečo robiť nemôže. 🙂 Aby sa dal využiť tento kredit, cena za pobyt musí byť aspoň 70 €, musí to byť Vaša prvá rezervácia cez Airbnb a nemôžete ho kombinovať s inými zľavami. O morálnosti opakovaného využívania týchto zliav sa toho popísalo veľa. Ja si myslím, že také obrovské spoločnosti ako Booking a Airbnb, na Vašej zľave nekrachnú, tak prečo neušetriť.

Vietnam experience

I was trying to find accommodation for three nights in Hoi An in Vietnam just one day before our arrival. The cheapest option that was ok for me was around 13 € / night / 2 people. I couldn’t use the 30 € credit here and together with service fee, I would pay around 40 €. So I decided why to not have something nicer for the same price and I started to research places that cost around 20 € / night so I get more than 65 € / trip and I can use 30 € discount. Thanks to this we got a beautiful place with swimming pool, breakfast and bicycles included for 15 € / night / 2 people. In Vietnam we had accommodation for 5 € / night / 2 people with breakfast included too but why not to enjoy something nicer if it’s for such a great price.

Ja som vo Vietnamskom mestečku Hoi An hľadala ubytko na tri noci, no na poslednú chvíľu. Najlacnejšia možnosť, ktorá ako tak spĺňala moje kritéria, bola okolo 13 € / noc / 2 osoby. Tu by som kredit využiť nemohla a spolu so servis fee by som zaplatila za tri noci cez 40 €. Tak som si povedala, prečo nemať niečo krajšie za rovnakú cenu a začala som pozerať možnosti okolo 20 € / noc / 2 osoby, aby som sa dostala cez 65 € / pobyt a bol mi odčítaný 30 € kredit. Vďaka tomu sme si za 15 € / noc / 2 osoby užili krásne ubytko s bazénom, raňajkami a bicyklami v cene. Vo Vietname sme mali ubytko aj za 5 € / noc / 2 osoby s raňajkami, no prečo si neužiť sem tam niečo viac, ak je to za takúto super cenu.

When we are traveling in cities sometimes I prefer to use booking, hotels and hostels seem cheaper here. Booking has very similar system as Airbnb, but here you can find a link for 10 % discount, or a link for 25 $ discount that will come on your account after finishing the trip. Minimum is just 30 $ / trip for 10 % discount, or 50 $ / trip for 25 $ discount, but you have to pay the whole price and you will get your money back after, not like Airbnb, that will give you your discount immediately. 

Pri poznávaní miest sa mi niekedy zdá lepšie využiť Booking, hotely a hostely sa mi tu zdajú lacnejšie. S Bookingom funguje veľmi podobný systém, ako s Airbnb, tu prikladám link na 10 % zľavu z ceny ubytka, ktorá Vám bude vrátená hneď, ako absolvujete pobyt. Minimum za pobyt je len 30 $, no na rozdiel od Airbnb platíte plnú sumu a peniaze Vám prídu neskôr. Pridávam ešte link na zľavu 25 $, tu je však minimum za pobyt 50 $.

Longtime traveling – Airbnb vs. Booking

Picking a place to stay is very circumstantial and depends on which country we visit and the time that we will stay there. For example Norway is generally considered an expensive country but we spent one month there and found a great place to stay on Airbnb with almost a 40% discount for staying a month. Most Airbnb hosts put a significant discount for longer periods of time making the nightly rate much better. I know that most of you will not travel for a month but this rule works for a week too. When looking for more than a week and up to a month I have found Airbnb to be the best platform for finding the best value.

Vyberanie ubytka je veľmi individuálne, v závislosti od krajiny, do ktorej sa vyberieme a času, ktorý zostaneme na jednom mieste. Napríklad Nórsko, ktoré je všeobecne drahé, no strávili sme tu mesiac, bolo jednoznačne super cez Airbnb. Zľava po zarezervovaní na minimálne mesiac bola skoro 40 %. Väčšina miest na Airbnb poskytuje zľavu, ak urobíte rezerváciu na dlhšiu dobu. Viem, že väčšina z Vás na mesiac nepocestuje, no tieto zľavy sú napríklad aj týždenné. Všeobecne ak hľadáte ubytko na dlhšiu dobu, Airbnb sa mi zdá najlepšia voľba.

Every person has different preferences for investing time into researching and spending money but I believe that everybody likes to save money. Why to not use this money for a tasty dinner (here in Asia at least three dinners 🙂 ), or some experience.

Každý človek má iné preferencie a je ochotný investovať rozdielny čas do hľadania, či peniaze do ubytka, no verím, že ušetriť chce každý. Prečo nepoužiť tieto peniaze radšej na chutnú večeru (tu v Ázii aspoň tri 🙂 ), či nejaký zaujímavý zážitok.
