One month as Jungle Jane – Bastimentos

Panama. When I say the name of this country what is going through your mind first? No, don’t touch your phone, I said first, so you are not allowed to use Google. But I have to admit that it was the first thing that I did, because when I bought a flight ticket to Panama I knew almost nothing about it besides the existence of the canal and it being somewhere in Central America. That’s it, I know, slightly embarrassing but isn’t it one of the reasons to travel, to learn knew facts and explore new places? I can already tell you that it’s a lot easier for me to remember all of the geographical facts and pieces of information about the places that I have visited. But let’s get back to Panama. I was surprised how many interesting facts I found.

Panama. Keď vyslovím meno tejto krajiny, čo Vám napadne ako prvé? Necháš ten telefón, povedala som ako prvé, Google je zakázaný. Musím sa ale priznať, že to bola prvá vec, ktorú som urobila ja, keď som kúpila letenku do Panamy. Nevedela som takmer nič, okrem existencie kanála a že je niekde v Strednej Amerike. Trošku zahanbujúce, ja viem, ale nie je práve to jedným z dôvodov cestovať, naučiť sa nové veci o krajinách a spoznávať nepoznané? Môžem povedať, že pre mňa je oveľa jednoduchšie si pamätať fakty o miestach, ktoré som už navštívila. Ale poďme naspäť do Panamy. Bola som prekvapená, koľko zaujímavých faktov som našla.

Lenka’s list of interesting facts about Panama

1. The official currency is the dollar, but Panama has its own official currency called the Balboa too. It is named after Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. There are only coins that are used in addition to dollar banknotes. The other thing that was named after this cool guy is a beer.  🙂 

Oficiálnou menou je dolár, Panama ale má aj vlastnú menu, ktorá dostala meno po španielskom objaviteľovi menom Vasco Núñez de Balboa, ide o mince, ktoré dopĺňajú dolárové bankovky. Ďalšia vec, ktorá dostala meno po tomto chlapíkovi, je pivo.  🙂 

2. The Panama Canal is more than 100 years old and when they started to build it Panama didn’t exist because it was still just part of Columbia.

Panamský prieplav sa začal stavať pred viac ako sto rokmi a keď ho začali budovať, Panama ešte neexistovala, pretože bola len časťou Kolumbie.

3. Bocas del Toro is a group of islands where we decided to spend a month. The main island Isla Colón was named after famous Christopher Columbus which he found during his exploration.

Bocas del Toro je skupina ostrovov, kde sme sa rozhodli stráviť mesiac, hlavný ostrov Isla Colón dostal meno po slávnom Krištofovi Kolumbovi, ktorý ho náhodne objavil počas svojich ciest.

4. Many episodes of the TV show Survivor were filmed here in Bocas del Toro.

Natočili tu veľa epizód slávnej televíznej šou Kto prežije.

5. Local people on Bocas del Toro have their own language which is a combination of English, Spanish and some dialect nonexistent in this world.

Miestni ľudia majú svoj vlastný jazyk, ktorý je zmiešaninou angličtiny, španielčiny a niečoho neexistujúceho nikde inde vo svete.

What we usually do first is to choose a destination and then an accommodation. I opened a webpage of Airbnb after buying the flight tickets to Panama and found a very magical place. It was a small wooden house on a small island in Panama, that had such a special discount after reservation for a month at least, that it was decided! One month on a tropical island, doesn’t it sound like a dream? I can say, for me, for sure yes. First, we explored the capital Panama City and town Boquete, I will tell you more about that in some later article. This one will be about my month in a tropical paradise.

Ako prvé si väčšinou vyberáme destináciu a potom, kde zložiť hlavu. Ja som po kúpení leteniek do Panamy otvorila Airbnb a objavila na prvý pohľad čarovné miesto. Malý drevený domček na ešte menšom ostrove v Paname, ktorý mal takú neuveriteľnú zľavu pri rezervácii na mesiac, že to rozhodlo. Mesiac na tropickom ostrove, no neznie Vám to ako sen? Mne teda áno. Najskôr sme preskúmali hlavné mesto Panama City a okolie mestečka Boquete, o tom Vám však poviem v niektorom ďalšom článku. Tento bude o mojom mesiaci v tropickom raji.

This dream house is on the island Bastimentos, that is part of the previously mentioned group of islands Bocas del Toro and one of the fifteen national parks in Panama. If you want to get there you need to take a bus to the town of Almirante and then a water taxi to the Island.

Tento dom snov sa nachádza na ostrove Bastimentos, ktorý je súčasťou už spomenutého súostrovia Bocas Del Toro a taktiež jedným z pätnástich panamských národných parkov. Aby sme sa tam dostali, bolo treba vyraziť autobusom do prístavného mesta Almirante a odtiaľ miestnym vodným taxíkom na ostrov.

Advice from me No. 1

• Prices of water taxis that are taking people between islands are changing according to the type of passenger. A local person pays one dollar, a tourist three and if they think you are that type of the tourist that will not question the price, they will ask five. Because we were there one month I was pretty pissed off by this system, but it’s pretty hard to convince them you are not a tourist with your white skin.  😉 

Ceny vodných taxíkov, ktoré tu prepravujú ľudí na ostrovy sa líšia v závislosti od toho, či ste turista. Miestny zaplatí jeden dolár, turista zaplatí tri a ak sa im zdá, že ste ten typ turistu, ktorý sa nevzpiera, skúsia zapýtať päť. Mňa to vedelo riadne vytočiť, keďže sme tu boli mesiac, ale tak darmo sa s bielou pokožkou budete tváriť na miestneho, to Vám nezožerú.  😉 

Reality vs. Expectations

The first impression was better than I expected. A jungle, beaches, cute wooden houses on the water, just one sidewalk through the Island, three small grocery stores, a few smaller restaurants and that’s it. Exactly, what you wish for when you are flying across the world to see something different than at home. Our cottage was a cabin on pillars with a terrace, where there was a space for a hammock, cooking, and doing dishes, inside was a bedroom and a small bathroom. This sounds fancy but it was just wood walls with no insulation that geckos would crawl through, two lights, a closet we had to pound nails into to hang our clothes and one stool, so the owner built us two small benches. We were surrounded by palm trees, just for us and for something around ten dollars per night.

Prvý dojem po dorazení na ostrov bol ešte lepší, ako som čakala. Džungľa, pláže, skromné drevené domčeky nad vodou, jeden chodník cez ostrov, tri malé predajne s potravinami, zopár menších miestnych reštaurácii a koniec. Presne, čo si želáme, ak niekde letíte cez pol sveta, teda vidieť niečo úplne odlišné, ako máme doma. Naša chalúpka bola domček na nohách s terasou, na ktorej bol priestor na hojdaciu sieť, varenie aj umývanie riadu, vnútri spálňa a malá kúpeľňa. Na prvý pohľad to možno znie luxusne, no boli to len drevené steny, kde jašterice lozili hore dolu zvonku dovnútra  a naopak, dve svetlá, šatník, do ktorého sme museli natĺcť klince, aby sme mali kde dať oblečenie. Jedna malá stolička, takže majiteľka nám ešte dala vyrobiť dve malé lavičky, aby sme sa mohli spolu aspoň najesť, keďže sme tu mali stráviť mesiac. Skromné, no medzi palmami a celé len pre nás za niečo okolo desať dolárov za noc.

We stayed in the only town on the island, Old Bank, which was mostly black people. In the south part of the town only lived a small population of native Indian Panamians. It’s really obvious that the majority of locals don’t like tourists, which is kind of interesting because I don’t know how they would earn money without tourists. The third group is Asians owning the shops like everywhere in the world, most of the time their six year old children ran the cashier!

Bývali sme v jedinom meste na ostrove, Old Bank, kde sa nachádzali prevažne miestni čiernej pleti. V jednej časti ostrova žila malá skupinka Panamčanov indiánskeho pôvodu, ktorí sa mi zdali oveľa milší. Na prvej skupinke jasne vidieť, že turistov na ostrove nemusia, čo je pre mňa zaujímavé, lebo okrem týchto turistov nemajú až toľko zdrojov príjmu. Tretia skupina sú ázijskí majitelia obchodov, asi tak ako všade vo svete. Zaujímavé bolo, že väčšinu času za kasou pracovali ich šesť ročné deti!

A funny fact

• People are living here in very simple poor wooden houses but you can see satellite dishes for TV on every single house. It looks really funny when you look around at these not perfect looking houses and there are huge blue plates for catching signal almost on every single roof.

Ľudia tu žijú v jednoduchých drevených domoch, ale satelitnú anténu na telku vidíte na každom jednom. Vyzerá to naozaj srandovne, keď sa pozriete okolo seba na tie ošarpané domčeky a na každej jednej streche vidíte veľký modrý tanier na chytanie signálu.

Water appreciation

A problem we didn’t think about was water. Rain water was collected from the roof and the gutter took it to a water tank. There was a water tank that was kind of scary when I looked into it the first time. It wouldn’t be so big problem that water wasn’t so clean, because we didn’t expect drinking water here, but the amount of water in the tank was almost nothing and it really didn’t look like it was going to rain. So we had to be VERY careful with not flushing the toilet until absolutely necessary…and to have just very short showers. That was actually not such a big problem, because water was just cold. The hardest part was not being able to shower every day sometimes after swimming in the sea! 

Problém, ktorý sme si vopred až tak neuvedomili, bola voda. Dažďová voda sa zo strechy zbierala do zásobníka vody, do ktorého, keď som sa pozrela prvý krát, nebolo mi všetko jedno. Čistota vody je jedna vec, ale o tú až tak nejde, pitnú vodu z kohútika sme tu nečakali. Ale to množstvo vody v zásobníku. Nebolo tam skoro nič a na dážď to veru nevyzeralo. Takže nás čakalo VEĽMI šetrné splachovanie toalety a veľmi rýchle sprchy. Tie však neboli až taký problém, keďže voda bola len studená. Najviac traumatické pre mňa bolo, keď som nemohla mať sprchu každý deň.

I couldn‘t believe how happy I was when we got the first rain. Because the gutter to fill the water tank was funky at best, it was necessary to catch water into buckets and manually bring water into the tank too. Once in the middle of the night, I woke David up to empty the water from the buckets into the tank while it was raining but of course he complained a lot while working in the rain at 1am. The next time when I asked him to move a full bucket, he didn’t do it immediately, the whole bucket fell down, we lost 5gallons of precious water and broke the bucket. One shower eliminated, I cried. Life in paradise can be so emotional too.  😀 

Sama som nemohla uveriť tomu, že som sa tešila, keď prišiel prvý dážď. Museli sme vodu chytať do vedier, pretože systém, ktorý ju mal zbierať, nefungoval práve najlepšie. Jeden krát som zobudila Davida o druhej cez noc, aby išiel so mnou preliať vodu z vedier, aby sme ich znovu naplnili, keď už toľko prší. Veľa brblania okolo toho, no urobil to. Ďalší krát, keď som ho poprosila, aby presunul plné vedro, on to neurobil hneď, vedro padlo, rozbilo sa a my sme stratili niekoľko litrov vody. O sprchu menej a ja som sa dokonca rozplakala. Aj takto emotívny môže byť život v raji.  😀 

Advice from me No. 2

• Bottled water in groceries was expensive. If it was necessary, you of course just bought it. We got lucky and found a machine with drinking water where it was possible to take a little bit more than a gallon of water for 50 cents and this was enough for one day of drinking and cooking, sometimes more.

Balená voda v obchode bola samozrejme drahšia. Ak je to nevyhnutné, čo už sa dá robiť. Potom sme však na ostrove objavili automat na pitnú vodu, kde sa dalo za 50 centov naplniť trochu viac ako galón a táto veľká fľaša vody nám vystačila minimálne na jeden deň pitia aj varenia.

Besides these few details, I can say it was life in paradise. Try to imagine that you are sitting on the terrace and directly next to you is a sloth hanging out of a tree and he is moving around and totally doesn‘t care that you are there. In fact, it was moving around a lot faster than I would have expected. I couldn‘t believe that he wasn‘t scared at all. After that, we saw sloths in a jungle few times including a mother with her baby, also poisonous red frogs that are typical for this island, lizards, spiders, butterflies and huge land crabs everywhere. Walking in the jungle was probably my favorite activity.

Okrem týchto pár drobností však môžem povedať, že to život v raji ozaj bol. Predstavte si, že sedíte pri raňajkách na terase a takmer na dosah ruky si vedľa vás na strome lebedí leňochod a prechádza si zo stromu na strom akoby nič. Mimochodom oveľa rýchlejšie, ako by som čakala. Nemohla som uveriť vlastným očiam, že ho vôbec netankuje, že sme tak blízko. Počas toho mesiaca sme ich videli pri preskúmavaní džungle niekoľkokrát, tak ako jedovaté červené žabky, typické pre tento ostrov, jašterice, pavúky, motýle či kraby na každom kroku. Prechádzky džungľou, kde nestretnete ani živú dušu, okrem tých zvieracích, boli asi mojou najobľúbenejšou aktivitou.

Hard life of a traveler

Trust me, it’s really easy to be ok with the simple life without an alarm clock and only wearing  a swimsuit. Just get up, enjoy breakfast on the terrace with a view of the sea and palm trees, go to the beach or rent a kayak, explore the jungle. After a day like that, we would have dinner on the terrace or in a local restaurant. The restaurant not so often, because the local food was kind of boring for us, mostly chicken, rice or our favorite plantains, fried bananas, that we cooked at home really often.

Verte mi, na ten jednoduchý život bez budíka, kde nepotrebujete skoro nič okrem plaviek, sa dá veľmi  ľahko zvyknúť. Vstať, užiť si raňajky na terase s výhľadom na more a palmy, ísť na pláž, alebo požičať kajak, poprípade preskúmať džungľu. Potom večera znova na terase, poprípade miestna reštika, do tých sme však nechodili až tak často. Miestna kuchyňa bola pomerne jednotvárna. Väčšinou kurčatá, príloha ryža alebo plantains, teda vyprážané banány, ktoré sme varili často aj doma a naozaj sme ich obľúbili.

A funny fact

• Chickens are everywhere around the Island, so it’s not such a big surprise to see them on the menu, but beside this use, there is one much more interesting use and that’s cock fighting. People were in circle, screaming and commenting very passionately and having loud arguments after the fight, so probably serious kind of fun.

Sliepky sú tu naozaj na každom kroku, ich prítomnosť na jedálničku teda neprekvapí, okrem toho majú však aj ďalšie využitie a to zápasy. Miestni sa zoskupili do kruhu a naozaj vášnivo povzbudzovali. Po vyhlásení výsledkov mali aj drsnú výmenu názorov, takže seriózna záležitosť.

We fell in love with coconut bread, or pan de coco, real sourdough smelling just like coconut. Local women were walking around the island with huge buckets full of this delicacy. If you are spoiled by traveling in Thailand or in another part of Asia you will think that Panama is expensive. Not just restaurants, but groceries too. I think I can say that sometimes it was more expensive to cook than to buy fried chicken and plantains in a local restaurant. But, we are on the Island, so expensive food is not so surprising, they have to bring almost everything there. On the other hand, we bought two fresh fish that they caught here for one dollar, a strange treat fresh mango with black pepper and vinegar – very unusual, for fifty cents. Fresh coconuts, pineapples or bananas were the best – David still cannot enjoy bananas in other countries after how tasty they were in Panama. 

Totálne sme podľahli kokosovým chlebovým plackám pan de coco, ktoré boli z poctivého kysnutého cesta a voňali kokosom. Predávali ich miestne žienky z veľkých košov, s ktorými chodili sem a tam po ostrove. Ak ste Thajskom, alebo inou časťou Ázie rozmaznaný turista, určite by sa Vám tu zdalo draho. Nie len v reštauráciách, ale hlavne v potravinách. Povedala by som, že variť nás niekedy vyšlo drahšie, ako ísť do miestnej reštiky na vyprážané kurča a plantains. Keďže sme na ostrove, nie je to až také prekvapivé, veď takmer všetko jedlo musia priviezť. Naopak dve celé ryby, ktorú tu môžu uloviť, sme kúpili za dolár, čerstvé mango netradične s čiernym korením a octom za päťdesiat centov. Čerstvé kokosy, ananásy či banány jednoducho nemali chybu. David sa od tejto chvíle sťažuje na chuť banánov všade, kde ideme,  pretože nič sa nemôže vyrovnať tým čerstvým panamským.

Advice from me No. 3

• No matter what you need to buy from them they are trying to get more money if you are a tourist. So just try to haggle for a better price. For example, when we bought coconuts the first time from a woman that had a sign about selling it next to her house it was a dollar for one coconut. Once we were sitting on the terrace and our neighbor was taking coconuts down from the trees around us, we took one dollar and asked him if we could get a coconut and he gave us 3 of them! Ok we didn’t haggle here.  🙂 This one tasted so much better than the previous one. Can you imagine that drink when we put local rum into the fresh coconut?

Nezáleží na tom, čo chcete kúpiť, ak ste turista, vždy sa budú snažiť dostať z Vás viac peňazí. Takže vždy môžete skúsiť dostať lepšiu cenu. Keď sme napríklad kúpili prvý krát čerstvý kokosový orech od ženy čo mala reklamu pri chodníku, bolo to jeden dolár za kokos. Keď sme raz sedeli na terase, videli sme, že náš sused zhadzuje orechy zo stromov, tak sme zobrali jeden dolár a šli sa spýtať, či môžeme dostať orech a on nám dal až tri,  nesťažovali sme si.  🙂 Sto krát chutnejšie ako ten prvý. Viete si predstaviť, čo to bolo, keď sme do tohto orecha s totálne čerstvou šťavou vo vnútri naliali rum.

• I am writing this article while I am in Norway so at this moment I feel like prices in Panama were really not so high anymore.

Čo sa týka cien, keď píšem tento článok, tak som v Nórsku, takže v tomto momente sa mi už ceny v Paname zdajú úplne smiešne.

We found fresh cashew fruit with a nut on the bottom. Just one nut on the whole thing the size of a pear. Isn’t that crazy? They usually eat just fruit and they throw that nut away. The fruit is sweet but a little bit bitter on your tongue, more specifically the feeling on your tongue is similar to biting into an unripe banana. My appreciation for one bag of cashews is a lot bigger after seeing how it grows.

Našli sme tu dokonca aj čerstvé kešu ovocie. Zospodu mu vyrastá kôstka, v ktorej je ukrytý jeden orech. Keď vidíte ten jeden orech na plode, hneď viete oceniť hrsť orechov, ktorú zjete ako nič. Orech tu ľudia väčšinou vyhodia a jedia len ovocie, ktoré je sladké, no trocha trpké na jazyku, ako keď sa zahryznete do banána, keď ho chcete ošúpať.

Waste problem

When people here eat outside and they don’t finish the food they just throw it on the sidewalk, so there are a lot of dogs everywhere. That wouldn’t be such a big a problem, animals are really fast in cleaning it, but that amount of trash that people are producing here and throwing everywhere around is terrible. They throw trash directly to the sea or on the beach next to the house, so you can see a TV or a fridge floating in the sea.

Nedojedené zvyšky tu ľudia vyhadzovali s reštiky rovno na ulicu, takže tu bolo veľa potulných psov, ktoré ich zbierali. Vyhodené jedlo ešte nie je až taký problém, to bolo vyzbierané zvieratami raz dva, ale to množstvo odpadu, ktoré je všade naokolo domov aj v mori, je priam až šokujúce. Ľudia tu vyhadzujú odpadky z domov priamo na pláže a do mora, nič výnimočné vidieť v mori plávať telku alebo chladničku.

In first world countries the problem of cleaning up waste is right now very trendy, people are smarter, but we maybe didn’t realize how big problems are in less developed or educated countries, or maybe they just don’t have so many options to do it differently, I don’t know. Maybe it should be a responsibility of country and government; maybe they should try to find a way how to educate people or how to motivate them to change it.

Problematika odpadu sa teraz stáva veľmi trendy, ľudia sa stávajú uvedomelejšími, ale asi si neuvedomujeme, aké veľké problémy sú v krajinách, ktoré možno nie sú dostatočne vzdelávane v tejto problematike, možno ani nemajú často inú možnosť, neviem posúdiť. Mala by to byť asi zodpovednosť krajiny a práve tá by asi mala hľadať možnosť, ako ľudí motivovať k zmene svojho správania.

Wouldn’t it be sad if we would destroy this beautiful planet? These beaches on these islands are the most beautiful and the reason why are we coming here. And there are really a lot of these breathtaking beaches. But I will speak about this next time, I don’t want to get you guys bored by endless pages and pages.  😀 My next article will be about our favorite and least favorite beaches, scuba diving lessons or me trying surfing for the first time in my life. I hope that I sent you a little bit of Panama’s sun and positive tropical energy with this article.

Nebolo by smutné, keby sme si túto našu krásnu prírodu úplne zdevastovali? Veď práve tie pláže, ktoré sa na týchto ostrovoch nachádzajú, sú to najviac dych berúce a ten dôvod prečo prichádzame.
