Lost in the desert – American roadtrip
“USA road trip” is a special travel category. Some of you have already done it, some of you are planning on it and some of you are just dreaming. Whoever has already seen these places can compare, whoever is planning to see, can find inspiration and whoever is just dreaming about it can maybe find out that this dream can be real.
„USA road trip“ je samostatná cestovateľská kategória. Niektorí z Vás ho už absolvovali, niektorí z Vás sa ešte len chystajú a niektorí z Vás o ňom snívajú. Kto už videl, môže porovnať, kto sa len chystá, môže načerpať inšpiráciu a kto ešte len sníva, sa možno presvedčí, že to môže byť reálny sen.
Visa situation
I did my dream road trip in June of last year. At the beginning I will tell you something about the visa situation, because the USA is a little bit different than the rest of the world. If you are going to visit America just for a trip shorter than 90 days, you don’t even need a visa. Slovakia and countries in this list have something like a non-visa agreement with the USA. The exact name of this authorization is ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). The only thing that you have to do is to have a biometric passport, to fill out an online form at least 72hrs before traveling, and to pay a $14 fee. When you will work on the form you will need an address in the US where are you planning to stay. My ESTA confirmation arrived one day after sending the form. Authorization is valid for 2 years and you can travel to the USA as many times as you want, one journey cannot be longer than 90 days. The next very important part is to have a roundtrip ticket, because without a ticket back they will not let you get in. Another thing that the immigration officer can ask is to show ESTA confirmation, so it’s fine to keep it accessible.
Vízová situácia
Ja Vám poviem niečo o tom mojom, ktorý sa konal v júni minulého roka. Na začiatok však k vízovej situácii. Ak idete do Ameriky len na výlet kratší ako 90 dní, víza v podstate ani nepotrebujete. S USA máme totiž tzv. bezvízový styk. Presný názov je ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Jediné, čo musíte urobiť, je mať biometrický pas, vyplniť elektronický formulár, odporúča sa aspoň 72 hodín pred vycestovaním a zaplatiť 14 dolárový poplatok. Pri vypĺňaní formulára budete taktiež potrebovať adresu v USA, kde budete ubytovaní. Ja som svoje ESTA potvrdenie dostala jeden deň po podaní žiadosti. Povolenie je platné dva roky a môžete do USA vycestovať opakovane, nesmiete však prekročiť spomínaných 90 dní počas jednej cesty. Ďalším dôležitým bodom je mať letenku naspäť, pretože keď dorazíte do USA, úradník na letisku si ju od Vás vypýta, ako dôkaz, že sa nechystáte v krajine zostať. Taktiež si od Vás môžu vypýtať ESTA potvrdenie, takže je fajn ho mať u seba.
When I visited my David in San Francisco the first time I had a pretty hard time at the airport. But it was the first and the last hard moment in the same time. Keď som ja prvý krát vyrazila navštíviť môjho Davida v San Franciscu, úradník na letisku mi dal svojimi otázkami celkom zabrať. To však bolo prvý aj posledný krát. Okrem toho som sa nikdy nestretla s ničím problémovým. Ak máte viac otázok o ESTA, pokojne mi napíšte na mojom instagrame, facebooku, alebo pošlite mail a ja rada pomôžem , ak budem vedieť.
Financials
What about flight tickets? Prices of flights from Europe to America went down unbelievably in the last few years. You can buy a round trip ticket for around $500, so it’s really not an unreal dream anymore. Prices in the USA are of course slightly higher, but you can deal with that too. Our trip was in June, so we were camping most of the time. You can build your tent almost everywhere in the US if you are out of the national parks. If you would build your tent somewhere in a National Park, probably a park ranger will stop by you and they will probably give you a fine.
We built our campsite in the middle of the Redwood National Forest and because it was a forest we thought that we could camp there, but we couldn’t camp there. Two rangers with lamps came to our tent in the middle of the night and I almost died how scared I was. David without pants on couldn’t even leave the tent. We got out of this situation without a fine and we could even stay because all official camping spots were full. Not everybody has to be so lucky, I suppose not every ranger is as nice as our ranger was.
Financie
Čo sa týka leteniek, ceny za letenky do Ameriky išli neuveriteľne dole za posledných pár rokov. Letenku do USA a späť teraz bez problémov kúpite okolo $500, takže už naozaj nejde o nereálny sen. Ceny v Amerike sú samozrejme o trošku vyššie, ale aj to sa dá. My sme podnikli náš výjazd v júni, takže počasie bolo úplne super a väčšinu času sme kempovali. Svoj stan si v USA môžete postaviť skoro kdekoľvek, ak sa držíte mimo parkov. Ak si postavíte stan napríklad v národnom parku, pravdepodobne sa pri Vás pristavia strážcovia parku a pravdepodobne Vám naparia pokutu.
My sme si raz rozložili naše hniezdočko uprostred lesa Redwood, ktorý je známy obrovskými sekvojami. Mysleli sme, že tu môžeme stanovať, ak je toto miesto označené ako les a nie park. Samozrejme to v poriadku nebolo. Uprostred noci sa k nám priblíži dvaja strážcovia s baterkami a ja som skoro zomrela od strachu. David bez nohavíc ani nemohol vyliezť zo stanu. Vyviazli sme bez pokuty a dokonca sme mohli zostať, pretože všetky kempové miesta boli plné. Nie každý však musí mať také šťastie, predpokladám, že nie každý strážca je taký milý, ako ten náš.
Almost every single park in the USA has an entrance fee. For big names it is usually around $30 per car. A whole year pass costs $80 for entrance to all national parks, so it depends on how many parks you are planning to see, but if you have a longer trip and space to see more, you should maybe consider the pass.
Takmer každý park v Amerike má spoplatnené vstupné. Pre tie známejšieho mena je to väčšinou okolo 30 dolárov za auto. Ročná permanentka stojí 80 dolárov, takže ak máte dlhší výlet a možnosť vidieť viacero parkov, asi by sa Vám to mohlo aj oplatiť.
Las Vegas
Now finally the list of the best places that we saw or at least the best for me. Our first stop was Las Vegas. I guess I don’t need to introduce this place. We arrived after probably a 10 hour drive in the middle of the night and we had just this night there, so it was a little bit exhausting, but still worth it. Las Vegas is exactly the same as you see it in the movies, unbelievably alive and full of lights. Las Vegas Strip is the famous street where you can find the most famous hotels and casinos, so it’s not bad to sleep somewhere close to it. Prices of accommodation in Las Vegas are not so terrible, in that huge amount of hotels that are available there, you can find every single price category. I am not such a big gambler, I feel bad for every single $ that I spend, but these options here would get everybody. A really positive surprise for me was the fact that when you play in a casino you get to drink for free. I think at least I don’t feel so bad for money that I lose because I feel that I get drinks for it. 🙂 This city full of a hazard, passion and fun, people of every kind and a crazy atmosphere has to get everybody. I experienced a really funny moment the next day when I went for a picture to the most famous sign with the name of the city and there was a real line of people waiting to pose for a picture. I felt ok with a picture from the side of it because the fact that you want a picture with the sign is already a little bit funny, but to wait in the line because of it seems even sillier. Plus I have a big head, so I could cover people in front of the sign. 🙂
Las Vegas
Tak a teraz už konečne zoznam toho najlepšieho, čo sme videli, alebo aspoň toho najlepšieho pre mňa. Naša prvá zastávka bolo Las Vegas. Toto miesto nemusím predstavovať asi nikomu. My sme dorazili po asi 10 hodinovej jazde uprostred noci a mali sme len túto noc, takže to bolo trošku náročné, no stálo to zato. Las Vegas je presne také, ako ho vidíme vo filmoch. Neuveriteľne vysvietené a živé. Las Vegas Strip je známa ulica, kde sa nachádzajú tie najznámejšie hotely a kasína, je teda fajn ubytovať sa niekde v okolí. Ceny ubytka v Las Vegas sa tiež celkom dajú, v tom neuveriteľnom množstve hotelov nájdete každú cenovú kategóriu. Ja nie som veľký hazardér, cítim sa zle za každý prehratý dolár, no tie možnosti tu by dostali každého. Čo ma pozitívne prekvapilo je, že keď hráte v kasíne, dostanete drinky zadarmo, takže Vás tá prehra aspoň toľko nemrzí, keď si ju prepijete. 🙂 Toto mesto plné hazardu, rozkoše a zábavy, ľudí každého typu a šialenej atmosféry musí dostať každého. Naozaj vtipný moment bol druhý deň, keď som sa išla vyfotiť k slávnemu nápisu pri vstupe do mesta a tam bola normálne rada, v ktorej ľudia čakali na fotku. Ja som si vystačila aj s fotkou bokom, už ten fakt, že sa fotíte s nápisom s názvom mesta je asi trošku vtipný, no ešte aj čakať v rade kvôli tomu, bolo na mňa trošku príliš. Plus ja mám veľkú hlavu, takže som v pohode zakryla ľudí ktorý stáli pri nápise. 🙂
Hoover Dam
Our next stop was the Hoover Dam. This place is on the Colorado River on the border of states Arizona and Nevada. It’s named after the President Hoover and they started to build this place during The Great Depression, so it should provide work for people in that really hard time. On the other hand, there were a lot of really unhappy workers there, so it’s hard to say how much help it was. I have to say that it’s a very impressive building that is definitely worth seeing.
Hoover Dam
Našou ďalšou zastávkou bola Hoover Dam, teda priehrada. Leží na rieke Colorado na hranici štátov Arizona a Nevada. Je pomenovaná po prezidentovi Hooverovi a začala sa stavať v čase Veľkej hospodárskej krízy, hovorí sa o nej ako o pomoci pre ľudí v týchto ťažkých časoch. Na druhej strane sa tu však počas stavby konali aj nepokoje, z dôvodu podmienok pre pracovníkov, takže ťažko povedať. Musím povedať, že ide o ohurujúcu stavbu a určite stojí za pozretie.
Grand Canyon
The next important stop was the famous Grand Canyon. This canyon was created by the already mentioned Colorado River in northern Arizona and it’s exactly as impressive as would you expect. When you are standing on the edge of the canyon that is never ending and you can watch these unbelievable rock formations, you feel like you are in magical land. I couldn’t get enough of these beautiful views. It’s maybe a very typical touristy place, there are around 5 million tourists every year, but again, it’s definitely worth it.
Grand Canyon
Teraz prichádza na radu slávny Grand Canyon. Bol vytvorený už spomínanou riekou Colorado v severnej Arizone a je presne taký ohurujúci, ako by ste čakali. Keď stojíte na okraji tej neuveriteľnej priepasti, ktorá nekončí a vidíte tie neuveriteľné skalné útvary, cítite sa ako v magickom svete. Ja som sa toho výhľadu nemohla nabažiť. Ide možno o typické turistické miesto, veď ho každoročne navštívi okolo 5 miliónov ľudí, no ja by som opäť povedala, že zaručene stojí zato.
Horseshoe Bend
The next definite must see is Horseshoe Bend. It’s an unbelievably shaped rock formation surrounded by water that looks like a horseshoe, obviously, according to the name. The view is really amazing and it’s quite fun to watch all scared people that want the picture close to the edge but they are terrified to come closer. This place is also close to Lake Powel that is great refreshment in hot weather.
Horseshoe Bend
Ďalším zaručeným „must see“ je Horseshoe Bend. Ide o neuveriteľne tvarovaný skalný útvar obkolesený vodou, ktorý pripomína konskú podkovu. Výhľad je naozaj čarovný a je celkom zábava pozorovať všetkých tých turistov, ktorí bažia po fotke, no sú zdesení postaviť sa na okraj útesu kvôli výhľadu. Toto miesto sa nachádza v blízkosti jazera Powell, ktoré je v týchto horúčavách príjemných osviežením.
Devil’s Garden
We had just a short stop in Devil’s Garden in the National Park Escalante. There are funny, crazy shaped rock formations, that are just standing in the middle of nothing and if you have to drive nearby and it doesn’t mean too much more driving for you I wouldn’t skip it, we had a lot of fun there.

Len krátkou zastávkou bolo pre nás Devil’s Garden v Národnom Parku Escalante. Ide o zábavné, šialene tvarované skaly, stojace uprostred ničoho a ak máte cestu a neznamená to pre Vás veľkú zachádzku , ja by som toto miesto nevynechala, my sme sa tu naozaj zabavili.
Escalante
Now I tell you something about already mentioned Escalante. When we were planning this trip I thought that we for sure have to see Antelope Canyon. Incredible orange color rock was something that I was excited about the most. Then we realized that this place is part of the Indian reservation and they are charging $60 per person to be part of a group. Plus you need to do it earlier because the closest time is totally booked out. That day we met 3 Czech guys in the grocery store and they said that if we will go to the Escalante National Park we will get a really similar experience and for free. They said just Escalante canyon, we put it into the map and just went for it. I can for sure tell that this was one of the scariest moments of my life. We got lost in the middle of the desert, no phone connection and such a terrible road that I thought every 5 minutes that the car would be destroyed. I really wasn’t sure if we were going to stay alive but somehow we got out of it and found the mentioned Escalante canyons that were beautiful, for free and without people. I didn’t visit Antelope so I cannot compare it but I have to say that we really enjoyed that atmosphere of exploring these magical places totally private, that we weren’t part of the huge group of tourists and there was nobody who would tell us where to go and where not to. Just one small piece of advice, put the exact spot into your map, for example, Spooky and Peek-a-boo Slot Canyons, because that part with being lost wasn’t so much fun.
Escalante
Teraz k spomenutému Escalante. Keď sme plánovali tento výlet, myslela som si, že určite musíme navštíviť Antelope Canyon. Neuveriteľné oranžovou farbou sfarbené skaly boli niečo, na čo som sa tešila najviac. Potom sme zistili, že toto miesto je súčasťou indiánskej rezervácie a účtujú si okolo 60 dolárov na osobu za vstup, kde ste súčasťou veľkej skupiny. Plus túto rezerváciu je potrebné urobiť vopred. Ten deň sme stretli v supermarkete trojicu Čechov, ktorí mi povedali, že keď sa vydáme do Escalante parku, nájdeme veľmi podobné miesto, kde sa však neplatí žiadne vstupné. Povedali mi však len Escalante Canyon a to bolo všetko. Ja som to hodila do navigácie a vyrazili sme. Môžem Vám povedať, že toto bol jeden z najdesivejších zážitkov v mojom živote. Stratili sme sa na celý deň uprostred púšte, kde sme nemali signál na telefón a cesta bola taká hrozná, že som si každú chvíľu myslela, že sme zdevastovali auto. Naozaj som si nebola istá, či toto prežijeme, no nejakým zázrakom sme sa z toho dostali a objavili sme spomínané Escalante Canyons, ktoré boli naozaj zadarmo, totálne bez ľudí a nádherné. Antelope som nenavštívila, takže nemôžem porovnať, no musím povedať, že sme si naozaj užili tú atmosféru, keď sme tieto magické miesta mohli preskúmať úplne súkromne, neboli sme súčasťou skupiny desiatok turistov a nebol tam nikto, kto by nám povedal, kde môžeme ísť a kde nie. Len malá rada na záver, ak pôjdete, dajte si do navigácie konkrétny názov, napríklad Spooky and Peek-a-boo Slot Canyons, pretože tá časť s blúdením naozaj nebola až taká zábava.
Escalante Natural Bridge
In Escalante Park, there is Escalante Natural Bridge, a huge rock that looks like a bridge. But the main fun experience for us was the way back because we decided to hike back literally down the river that was technically going next to the trail. It was a nice refreshment, and again we didn’t meet anybody the whole time. And no worries, it was totally ok, during this hike I saw just three snakes in the water. 🙂
Escalante Natural bridge
V Escalante parku je aj Escalante Natural bridge, obrovská skala, ktorá vyzerá ako most. Čo sme si však užili naplno bola spiatočná cesta, pretože sme sa vybrali naspäť riečkou, ktorá vedie popri chodníku. Prijemne sme sa osviežili a opäť, nestretli sme ani živú dušu. A nebojte sa, bolo to úplne v pohode, počas tej cesty som videla vo vode asi iba troch hadov. 🙂
Bryce Canyon
At the end of the trip, we made a short stop in Bryce Canyon National Park. This park is in the state of Utah. That view is again amazing because the park is created by hundreds of sandstone towers. You have a few options for a hike; our choice was really relaxing, we did it in flip-flops. Professional American tourists that had clothes and shoes like they would go hiking half of the USA were pointing at us of course, but it really wasn’t anything hard.
Bryce Canyon National Park
Na záver sme ešte zastavili v Bryce Canyon National Park. Tento park sa nachádza v štáte Utah. Výhľad je opäť ohurujúci, pretože park je tvorený stovkami pieskovcových skalných veží. Môžete si vybrať viacero možností na túru, naša bola naozaj oddychová, zvládli sme to v žabkách. Profi americký turisti, vybavený ako na prejdenie polovice USA, si na nás samozrejme ukazovali, no naozaj to nie je nič náročné.
This area can offer a lot more than I mentioned but we had just a week, so I chose the most beautiful places for me. So what, are you already opening the ESTA webpage and planning your road trip?
