Green paradise of Cuba – Viñales
Before I visited Cuba I didn’t know a lot about it. When I heard Cuba, I imagined Havana, cigars, dancing, drinks and beautiful beaches. I didn’t know about the area called Viñales and the beautiful nature that you can find there. This part of Cuba is really a gem. Our trip to Cuba was short but 3 nights in Viñales was the best decision.
Než som prvý krát navštívila Kubu, veľa som toho o nej nevedela. Keď som počula slovo Kuba, myslela som na mesto Havana, cigary, tanec, pitie drinkov a nádherné pláže. Nemala som tušenie o oblasti zvanej Viñales a nádhernej prírode, ktorá sa tu nachádza. Táto časť Kuby je naozaj poklad. Náš výlet na Kubu bol síce krátky, no 3 noci strávené vo Viñales boli to najlepšie rozhodnutie.
Viñales is a municipality but also a small town too. You can find it in the north-central Pinar del Rio Province. It’s a rural area with large limestone cliffs covered by green flora and surrounded by tobacco farms, horses and extremely nice people. When we were there in June, there were almost no other tourists, which was a nice bonus.
Viñales je celá oblasť, ale aj malé mestečko. Môžete ho nájsť v severne-centrálnej provincii Pinar del Rio. Ide o vidiecku oblasť s vápencovými skalami pokrytými zelenou flórou a obkolesenými tabakovými farbami, všade kone a milí ľudia. My sme tu boli v júni a okrem nás tu skoro neboli turisti, čo bol pekný bonus.
How to get from Havana to Viñales
I believe that most of us start our trip in Havana, so how to get from Havana to Viñales? These two places are approx. 180 km far apart. The most affordable way is, of course, a bus, either local, which I don’t have a clue how many it would take to get there or you can use a company called Viazul. The official rate for the bus ticket is 12 CUC. CUC is Cuban Convertible Peso and it’s approx. equal to a dollar. We didn’t choose a bus this time, because we didn’t have as much time as usually. Another, still affordable way is to take a taxi called „collectivo“, which means you will join the taxi with other people. One way cost us around $20, it’s up to you, how good are you in negotiating, maybe you can get an even better price.
Ako sa dostať z Havany do Viñales
Verím, že vačšina z nás začne v Havane, takže ako sa dostať z Havany do Viñales? Tieto dve miesta sú vzdialené približne 180km. Najlacnešia cesta je samozrejme autobus, buď miestny, ale to nemám ani tucha, koľko zaberie, alebo môžete využiť spoločnosť Viazul. Oficiálna cena lístka s touto spoločnosťou je 12 CUC, čo je kubánske peso a približne sa rovná doláru. My sme sa tentokrát rozhodli, že nepôjdeme autobusom, lebo sme nemali až toľko času, ako zvyčajne. Ďalšia, stále celkom dostupná možnosť, je zobrať taxík, ktorý sa nazýva„collectivo“, čo znamená, že budete zdieľať auto s ďalšími cestujúcimi. Jedna cesta nás stála okolo $20, je len na Vás, ako sa Vám darí v zjednávaní, možno dokážete zjednať aj lepšiu cenu.
Accommodation
The first day we arrived around 4 p.m. and didn‘t expect to do anything big, but the owner of our place told us that we still have enough time for a small trip. By the way, this accommodation was really cute and I would recommend it. It was a cute family, we had a nice room with private bathroom and outside sitting area, where we could enjoy tasty and quiet big breakfast. We argued about the price a little bit and paid $15 for the room for both and $5 for breakfast for each. Check the picture of their card with all the details below.
Ubytovanie
Dorazili sme okolo štvrtej poobede a teda nečakali, že by sme ešte mohli mať čas niečo podniknúť. Majiteľ nášho ubytka nám povedal, že by pre nás ešte mohol dohodnúť výlet. Mimochodom, toto ubytko bolo naozaj milé a odporučila by som ho. Veľmi milá rodina, mali sme peknú izbu s kúpeľňou a vonkajším sedením, kde sme si mohli užiť chutné a pomerne veľké raňajky. Trošku sme zjednávali cenu a zaplatili sme $15 za izbu pre oboch a $5 za raňajky pre jedného. Prikladám fotku so všetkými potrebnými informáciami.
And now back to the quick afternoon trip. We don’t usually choose to pay for an organized trip, but this was $15 per person and we felt like we didn’t have enough time to figure something out on our own, so we decided why not give it a chance.
Teraz sa vráťme späť k nášmu krátkemu poobednému výletu. Zvyčajne sa nerozhodneme platiť organizovaný výlet, ale tento bol $15 za osobu a mali sme pocit, že v takom krátkom čase už toho veľa na vlastnú päsť nestihneme, tak sme si povedali, že tomu dáme šancu.
Surprisingly, from the first moment, this was one of the cutest trips we have ever done. The owner of our place said, that a taxi is coming for us. A few minutes later a horse carriage stopped by our house. That would be the cutest thing ever if David wasn’t asthmatically allergic to horses. David decided it’s going to be fine, he would sit in the back of the carriage, so no contact with the horse and I was just happy how cute this trip starts. After we arrived, the surprise was even bigger, because there was a guide holding 3 horses obviously waiting for us. At that moment we realized we bought a horseback riding trip.
Na naše prekvapenie, toto bol jeden z najmilších výletov, čo sme kedy absolvovali. Náš majiteľ nám oznámil, že náš taxík je na ceste. O pár minút neskôr, kôň a voz zastavil pri našom dome. To by bola tá najrozkošnejšia vec na svete, keby David nebol alergický na kone. David rozhodol, že to bude v pohode, že si sadne úplne na koniec voza, takže žiaden kontakt s koňom a ja som sa mohla len tešiť, ako rozkošne tento výlet začal. Keď sme dorazili na miesto, prekvapenie bolo ešte väčšie, pretože tam stál náš sprievodca a 3 kone, takže už bolo jasné, že sme si vlastne zaplatili výlet na koňoch.
In the beginning, I was scared but David said his allergy is not such a big deal and we should do it. I love horses so he didn’t need to push too much. It was the best! We had so much fun! It was just 2 of us plus our cowboy, so not being a part of a big group, we could go as fast or as slow as we wanted, we were riding through the river and saw such beautiful nature. It was definitely one of the most peaceful experiences that we have ever had.
Zo začiatku som sa bála, no David povedal, že to nie je s jeho alergiou zasa taká katastrofa a zvládne to. Ja zbožňujem kone, takže dlho ma prehovárať nemusel. Bolo to naozaj super a úžasne sme sa zabavili. Boli sme jediný účastníci výletu, plus náš kovboj, takže žiadna veľká otravná skupina, mohli sme ísť tak rýchlo, alebo pomaly, ako sme chceli, išli sme cez rieku a tú najkrajšiu prírodu. Bol to jeden z tých najkrajších a najpokojnejších zážitkov, aké máme.
Cigar farm
Our first stop was a family owned cigar farm. They were planting their own tobacco and making cigars too. We learned that there is a law for them, that they have to sell most of their tobacco production to the government for a really low price and this tobacco is then used for all those expensive cigars that tourists buy, so small businesses have a really hard time to make some money. We had sweet time here, we tried the local drink, smoked their cigars with a little bit of honey on the end of the cigar that goes into your mouth (honey was my favorite part) and watched how they make cigars.

Naša prvá zastávka bola rodinná farma na výrobu cigár. Pestovali si tu vlastný tabak a tiež vyrábali cigary. Dozvedeli sme sa, že zo zákona musia väčšinu svojej produkcie predať vláde za úplne smiešne ceny a tento tabak je potom použitý na výrobu drahých cigár, ktoré si kupujú turisti, takže pre miestnych malých podnikateľov je naozaj ťažké zarobiť aspoň ako také peniaze. Veľmi sme si to tu užili, skúsili sme miestny drink, ich cigary, ktoré sme fajčili s troškou medu na konci cigary, ktorý išiel do úst (med bol moja obľúbená časť) a mohli sme vidieť, ako sa cigary vyrábajú.
Fruit and coffee farm
The next point of our trip was the farm with fruit and coffee. We got a little tour, got to taste their coffee and rum. Both of them were grown right there. We watched how they processed their coffee and they roast it directly on the fire. We finished our trip with a romantic view over the lake and rode our horses back.

Ďalší bod nášho programu bola návšteva farmy s kávou a ovocím. Mali sme tu krátku prehliadku a ochutnali sme ich kávu a rum. Obidve boli vypestované priamo tam. Pozorovali sme, ako spracovávajú ich kávu a ako ju pražia priamo na ohni. Výlet sme zakončili romantickým výhľadom na jazero a na našich koňoch sme dorazili späť.
Food
We finished our day with a tasty dinner in a local restaurant. We decided on „Cordero“, sautéed lamb. I can say that most of the restaurants were serving tasty food and prices were cheap. This was just the day of our arrival and we already felt like it was worth it.
Jedlo
Deň sme zakončili v miestnej reštaurácii. Rozhodli sme sa pre „Cordero“, dusené jahňacie mäso. Môžem povedať, že väčšina reštaurácií mala chutné jedlo a dobré ceny. Toto bol ešte len deň nášho príchodu a už sme mali pocit, že to stálo zato.
Valle de Viñales
The second day we rented bicycles and explored a UNESCO World site valley called “Valle de Viñales”. Bicycles were the best way how to enjoy this natural treasure. Everywhere in the valley, you can see huge limestone cliffs covered by trees, bush and green grass. This kind of surroundings reminds me Asia and I would not expect it in Cuba.

Druhý deň sme si požičali bicykle a preskúmali údolie zapísané aj v UNESCU, ktoré sa nazýva „Valle de Viñales”. Bicykle boli najlepšia cesta, ako si užiť túto nádheru. Všade v údolí môžete vidieť vápencové skaly pokryté stromami, kríkmi a zelenou trávou. Tento typ prírody mi pripomenul Áziu a na Kube by som to naozaj nečakala.
We stopped in couple caves, both of them were kind of tourist traps. The bigger one, “La Cueva del Indio” was crazy touristy! First, we walked for a little bit through the cave and then we came to the biggest line of people that you can imagine could fit in the cave. All these people, including silly us, were waiting for a boat. The boat ride took maybe two minutes and that was it. Maybe we are spoiled after all of our traveling, I don’t know, but I would not recommend this cave.
Zastavili sme pri dvoch jaskyniach, obe boli tak trochu chyták na turistov. Väčšia z nich, „La Cueva del Indio” bola šialene preplnená turistami. Najskôr sme išli kúsok cez jaskyňu a potom sme dorazili k najväčšej rade ľudí, akú si len môžete v jaskyni predstaviť. Všetci títo ľudia, zahŕňajúc nás, čakali na loď. Jazda na lodi zabrala asi dve minúty a to bolo všetko. Možno sme rozmaznaní, po tom všetkom cestovaní, neviem, no toto miesto by som neodporučila.
Mural de la Prehistoria
After that we saw kind of bizarre “Mural de la Prehistoria” which is a huge painting on the rock that is supposed to show the theory of evolution. I think its kind of funny but definitely the special kind of art, so worth it to do a quick stop here. You can get the view of the painting from the road or you can pay an entrance fee 3 CUC, which includes a drink too.

Ďalší bod programu bola zvláštna „Mural de la Prehistoria”, čo je vlastne obrovská maľba na skale, ktorá má zobraziť teóriu evolúcie. Myslím, že trošku vtipný, no určite zaujímavý druh umenia, takže to stojí za zastavenie sa. Výhľad na maľbu máte aj z cesty, alebo si môžete zaplatiť vstupné 3 CUC, čo zahŕňa aj nápoj.
After this, we just randomly turned in the field to take a shorter way home and we came to the place on the top of the hill with the most beautiful view ever. We saw a deck with a view and we were not sure if is it a restaurant or no, but they offered us drinks. I got fresh coconut, David a lime juice and we spent a lot of time just staring at this unbelievable view and feeling like the luckiest people in the world to have an opportunity to enjoy something like this.
Na ceste domov sme len náhodne zabočili do poľa, pretože sme si mysleli, že nájdeme kratšiu cestu domov. Namiesto toho sme objavili krásne miesto na vrchole kopca s najkrajším výhľadom. Zbadali sme drevenú terasu s výhľadom a neboli sme si istí, či ide o reštauráciu, no ponúkli nám niečo na pitie. Ja som si dala čerstvý kokos, David limetkový džús a strávili sme kopec času len obdivovaním toho krásneho výhľadu. Cítili sme sa, ako keby sme mali najväčšie šťastie na svete, dostať príležitosť vidieť takúto nádheru.
Casa de la Musica
At night we felt for a little bit of dancing so we went to the “Casa de la Musica”. This is a place where everybody who wants to dance goes. The entrance fee was a dollar for tourists. We had so much fun, live music, a mix of locals and tourists, cheap drinks and tons of great salsa and bachata were a great mix. If you ever visit Viñales, you have to go.

Večer sme sa cítili, že by sme si zatancovali, tak sme sa vybrali do „Casa de la Musica“. Toto je miesto, kde ide každý, kto si chce zatancovať. Vstupný poplatok bol dolár pre turistov. Super sme sa zabavili, živá hudba, turisti a miestni spolu, lacné nápoje a kopec skvelej salsy a bachaty boli ideálna kombinácia. Ak niekedy pôjdete do Viñales, určite musíte ísť.
Day on the beach
Our last day was a beach day. You can take a “Collectivo”, shared taxi from Viñales to Cayo Jutias. It’s kind of a bumpy ride but the beach is for sure worth it. It’s a white sand beach with the clearest and warmest water. We got lucky, there were not that many people, so we enjoyed private peace of the beach and spend the whole day just soaking in the sea. There are a few restaurants; one of them had even life music. Generally, it is a really quiet and peaceful beach.

Náš posledný deň sme strávili na pláži. Môžete si zobrať „Collectivo”, zdieľané taxi, z Viñales do Cayo Jutias. Cesta je ozaj hrboľatá, no pláž stojí zato. Ide o bielu pláž s tou najčistejšou a najteplejšou vodou. Mali sme šťastie, na pláži nebolo veľa ľudí, takže sme si užili náš súkromný kúsok pláže a strávili sme celý deň naložení v mori. Na pláži je pár reštaurácií, jedna z nich mala dokonca aj živú hudbu. Všeobecne ide o veľmi pokojnú pláž.
After last night in our cute house, we took „Collectivo” in the morning and went directly to the airport. We didn’t even need to go back to Havana, which saved us a lot of time and we had enough time to enjoy two full days in Havana and three days in Viñales. Po poslednej noci v našom rozkošnom ubytovaní sme si zobrali „Collectivo“ priamo na letisko. Nemuseli sme ísť ani späť do Havany, čo nám ušetrilo veľa času a tak sme si mohli užiť celé dva dni v Havane a tri dni vo Viñales. Aj keď sme na Kube mali len päť dní, zamilovali sme si ju.
