3 days in Madrid
I have to admit that before I visited Madrid I didn’t really have high expectations. I was of course generally excited, it’s Spain, the country of sun, fun, good food and we cannot forget sangria. But now, after 3 days in Madrid, I can say my opinion is very different and Madrid definitely surprised me in the most positive way.
Musím sa priznať, že než som navštívila Madrid, nemala som príliš veľké očakávania. Samozrejme, že som bola všeobecne natešená, predsa len, je to Španielsko, slnko, zábava, dobré jedlo a nesmieme zabudnúť, sangria. Ale teraz, po troch dňoch v Madride som totálne zmenila názor a toto mesto ma prekvapilo v tom najlepšom.
Save some money
We reserved just 2 nights in Madrid, but we got full 3 days out of it and that was thanks to the good timing of our flights. We had an early morning flight with Wizzair on the way there and then a late night flight with Ryanair on the way back. I am sure you noticed that there are tons of deals for flight tickets across Europe right now, but you can make it even cheaper. You can buy Wizzair membership, which cost €29.99 per year, and gives you and one person traveling with you cheaper tickets and baggage too. We already saved some money on our first trip, even though we had to pay for membership. If it sounds interesting to you, check more info about it here. We had a really nice accommodation in the area called Malasaña, that had better prices than the center. It was very comfortable walking distance to the center, and metro stations were everywhere too. We found it on Airbnb. If you want to get a discount, either Airbnb or Booking, click here.
Ušetrite nejaké peniažky
Ubytko sme mali len na dve noci, no užili sme si plné tri dni a to vďaka tomu, ako sme naplánovali lety. Leteli sme skoro ráno do Madridu s Wizzair a späť neskoro večer s Ryanair. Som si istá, že ste určite postrehli, že letenky po Európe sú teraz naozaj lacné. Môžete ušetriť aj trošku viac, napríklad s Wizzair klubom. Členstvo stojí €29.99 na rok a dostanete zľavu na letenky aj batožinu pre Vás a pre osobu cestujúcu s Vami. My sme hneď ušetrili nejaké peniaze pri kúpe našej prvej cesty, aj keď sme museli zaplatiť toto členské. Ak Vás to zaujalo, mrknite tento link. Mali sme veľmi pekné ubytko v časti Malasaña, ktoré malo oveľa lepšiu cenu ako ubytko priamo v centre, stále však bolo super dostupné na pešo a aj metro stanice boli na každom kroku. My sme si vybrali cez Airbnb, tu prikladám link na zľavu, či už Airbnb, alebo aj Booking.
Public Transportation
To get from the airport to the city center or wherever you need is really easy; there is a metro station directly at the airport. Be ready that besides basic ticket fare you have to pay an airport fee plus fee for the metro card itself, but this one you will keep and use for all metro tickets during your trip. After all these fees, I think we paid €14 or 16 for 3 people. So if it is more of you traveling maybe check Uber too and compare if it’s even worth it to take a metro. Another option is to buy a tourist metro ticket, but we didn’t use it, because we had everything relatively close to our accommodation.
Hromadná doprava
Dostať sa z letiska do centra Madridu je naozaj jednoduché, stanica metra je priamo na letisku. Pripravte sa však na špeciálny príplatok zato, že idete z letiska a potom ešte za kartička, na ktorú si nabíjate lístky. Tú však môžete použiť celý čas, ktorý strávite v Madride. Spolu so všetkými týmito poplatkami nás tri stála cesta z letiska okolo €14 alebo 16, už si presne nepamätám. Takže ak Vás je viac, možno mrknite aj cenu Uber taxíku, môže sa stať , že Vás to vyjde približne rovnako. Ďalšia možnosť je turistický lístok, my sme ho nevyužili, pretože sme skoro všetko mali blízko a mohli sme skoro všade zájsť pešo.
After all that traveling we were of course hungry. There was a super cute place directly next to our apartment. Lolina Vintage Café offered a cheap breakfast menu that included fresh still warm homemade croissants, which were just melting in my mouth. After this breakfast, my opinion of Madrid was already a lot higher. 🙂 I have to say, food in Madrid is not all amazing, especially around touristy attractions you usually find a lot of expensive but really not especially tasty food. So my recommendation, try to get a little further from the main attraction before you choose a restaurant.
Po všetkom tom cestovaní sme boli samozrejme vyhladované. Mali sme super reštiku, alebo skôr kaviareň, rovno vedľa nášho ubytka. Lolina Vintage Café malo super raňajkové menu, ktoré okrem iného malo čerstvo upečené, ešte teplé croissanty, ktoré sa úplne roztápali v ústach. Po týchto raňajkách som hneď mala lepší názor o Madride. 🙂 Musím povedať, že v Madride natrafíte na veľa reštaurácií, ktoré sú tak trochu sklamaním. Hlavne tie, ktoré sú blízko turistických pamiatok, väčšina z nich je drahších, no nie až tak chutných, takže odporúčam zájsť niekde do bočných uličiek, keď budete vyberať reštiku.
Madrid can offer a lot more than I will show you in my list of places that we visited, but I believe that these places can be good start and that I can give you information that will help to decide where to go.
V Madride je toho oveľa viac ako tu ja spomeniem, no dúfam, že toho bude dosť, aby som Vám pomohla sa rozhodnúť, kam sa vybrať.
The Royal Palace of Madrid
The Royal Palace of Madrid or Spanish Palacio Real de Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, but now they use it just for state ceremonies. The interior of this palace is impressive, beautiful historical architecture, walls, and paintings are definitely worth to see. You can avoid paying the entrance fee. Monday to Thursday, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. (October – March), 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. (April – September) is free for citizens of European Union and Latin America. We did it and we definitely had enough time to see everything. There was a huge line, but it was moving really fast, so I would say worth to save €13 per person.
The Royal Palace of Madrid, teda Kráľovský palác, je oficiálnym sídlom kráľovskej rodiny, ale teraz ho už využívajú len na štátne ceremónie. Interiér je naozaj krásny, architektúra, steny, maľby skutočne stoja za Váš čas. Môžete sa aj vyhnúť plateniu vstupného, ak prídete od pondelka do štvrtka, od štvrtej do šiestej (október – marec), alebo od šiestej do ôsmej (apríl – september). My sme šli v tomto čase a mali sme totálne dosť času vidieť všetko. Bola tam dosť dlhá rada, ale šlo to rýchlo, takže jednoznačne to stojí za ušetrenie €13 za osobu.
Almudena Cathedral
Directly next to the Royal Palace of Madrid is Almudena Cathedral, which offers the best view of the Royal Palace, plus a nice museum, some viewpoints around the cathedral and very interesting colorful ceiling that feels very unusual for this kind of place.
Hneď vedľa paláca je Almudena katedrála, z ktorej máte super výhľad práve na palác. Taktiež je tu pekné múzeum, vyhliadkové body a veľmi zaujímavý farebný strop.
Mercado de San Miguel
If you are already hungry you can take a bite in Mercado de San Miguel which is a cool covered market that offers many kinds of tapas, olives, cheeses, cocktails, wine or beer too. Everybody can find something tasty here. It’s a very busy, lively and vibrant place. In walking distance is Plaza Mayor, which is kind of recommended tourist place in Madrid, but I would say if it’s not really on the way for you, it’s not worth it, it’s a historical square with red buildings and touristy restaurants. When we visited it there was a huge stage in the middle, so maybe that destroyed my positive feeling about it, but honestly, I don’t think so.
Ak už pociťujete hlad, môžete sa zastaviť na trhu Mercado de San Miguel. Ide o veľmi živý, rušný a zábavný krytý trh, kde si môžete kúpiť veľa druhov tapas, olív, syrov, taktiež kokteilov, vín a pív. Každý si tu nájde niečo svoje. Blízko trhu sa nachádza Plaza Mayor, červené námestie, ktoré je odporúčanou turistickou destináciou, no ja až nechápem prečo. Ak ho máte po ceste určite sa prejdite cez, no pre mňa to bolo len námestie s reštikami všade naokolo. Keď sme tu boli bolo uprostred obrovské pódium, čo možno pokazilo môj dojem, no nie som si tým istá.
Puerta del Sol
There is a square called Puerta del Sol that is great for sitting by the fountain and watching local artists, sellers and tons of people walking around. There is also a famous statue of the bear and the strawberry tree, the symbol of Madrid. To watch people selling mostly fake purses on the street was quite an adrenaline experience, their business is probably not fully legal because they put all stuff on a sheet, that has corners connected with rope and if they hear or see the police, they pack it like a backpack in a second and just run.
Námestie, ktoré sa volá Puerta del Sol je super na posedenie pri fontáne a pozorovanie miestnych umelcov, predavačov a vlastne aj všetkých ľudí ktorí sa mihnú okolo. Je tu aj socha medveďa, ktorá je symbolom Madridu. Celkom adrenalínový zážitok bolo pozorovať ľudí predávajúcich falošné kabelky. Ich podnikanie asi nie je celkom legálne, lebo majú kabelky rozložené na plachtách, ktoré majú rohy spojené lanom a keď zavetria políciu, hodia plachtu na chrbát ako batoh a bežia.
From Madrid to Toledo
Toledo was our plan for the second day. It’s an ancient city nearby Madrid, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It’s definitely worth to see, or not just that, it was actually the highlight of our trip. You have 2 options, either take a bus, that is cheaper, but takes little longer, I am not sure, but I think it’s at least an hour, or take a train that takes little less than 30 minutes. We decided to take a train, but the price for 3 people there and back was around €60. The train leaves from Atocha Train station in Madrid, which is an experience by itself because there is a really nice botanical garden in the middle of the station.
Náš plán na druhý deň bolo mestečko Toledo. Historické mestečko blízko Madridu, ktoré sa nachádza aj na zozname UNESCO, bolo jednoznačne naša najobľúbenejšia časť celého výletu. Máte dve možnosti, ako sa tam dostať, autobus alebo vlak. Autobus je lacnejší, ale dlhšia cesta, myslím, že okolo hodiny, vlak trvá niečo menej ako pol hodiny. My sme sa rozhodli pre vlak, no cena pre nás tri bola okolo €60. Vlak odchádza zo stanice Atocha, ktorá je už hneď zážitkom, pretože priamo na stanici je niečo ako botanická záhrada.
Alcázar of Toledo
You can just wander around Toledo and every second building is some kind of historical treasure. While you are coming to the city you have a great view of Alcázar of Toledo, the highest point of Toledo. This building used to be a fortress; there is a military museum now.
Môžete sa len tak prechádzať cez Toledo a každá druhá budova bude historickým pokladom. Ako budete prichádzať k mestu, budete mať krásny výhľad na Alcázar of Toledo, najvyšší bod Toleda. Bývalé väzenie je dnes vojenským múzeom.
If you plan to see more in Toledo, you can buy an armband, that cost €10 and includes multiple sides. We didn’t do it, because we realized that there is something like that after visiting the first few places, but I think it would be worth it.
Ak toho plánujete v Tolede navštíviť viac, môžete si kúpiť náramok za €10, ktorý zahŕňa vstup do niekoľkých pamiatok. My sme si ho nekúpili, lebo sme to zistili, až keď sme mali za sebou pár miest, ktoré sú tu zahrnuté, no myslím, že to stojí zato.
Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes
My favorite place in Toledo was Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. To be in this 15th century monastery feels like to be in a fairytale. Beautiful architecture combined with orange trees and all plants in the middle of the monastery makes this place breathtaking.
Moja obľúbená pamiatka v Tolede bolo Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. V tomto v 15-tom storočí postavenom kaštieli som sa cítila ako v rozprávke. Krásna architektúra v kombinácii s pomarančovníkmi a ostatnou zelenou v strede budovy robí toto miesto naozaj magickým.
Catedral Primada
Another breathtaking place in Toledo is Catedral Primada. It’s one of the biggest cathedrals and it’s considered the best example of High Gothic architecture in Spain. I am not the biggest fan of audio guides, but this place has so much to show and say, that you and your audio guide can spend hours wondering around. I would recommend buying a ticket that includes the visit of the tower too, you get a really nice view and will learn more interesting information about the history of this impressive cathedral that was like many Christian buildings in Toledo and across the country built on a Mosque.
Ďalším dych berúcim miestom v Tolede je Katedrála Primada. Jedna z najväčších katedrál sa považuje za najlepší príklad gotickej architektúry v Španielsku. Nie som najväčší fanúšik audio sprievodcov, ale toto miesto má veľa čo povedať a ukázať, dá sa tu stráviť hodiny prechádzaním po katedrále a počúvaním zaujímavých faktov. Odporúčam kúpiť lístok aj so vstupom na vežu, dostanete pekný výhľad a dozviete sa ešte viac zaujímavých faktov o tejto katedrále, ktorá bola ako veľa iných postavená na mešite.

Back to Madrid
Our last day in Madrid was so nice and sunny, so a perfect day for visiting a park. On our way to the El Retiro Park, we stopped in Palacio de Cibeles. It’s kind of impressive building by itself, but the reason why people come here is the view from its observation deck. After you enjoy the view you can continue to the park that is close by.
Náš posledný deň v Madride bol krásne slnečný, ako stvorený na návštevu parku. Na našej ceste do El Retiro parku sme sa zastavili v Palacio de Cibeles. Ide o zaujímavú budovu, no hlavný dôvod, prečo ľudia prichádzajú, je výhľad zo strechy budovy. Keď sa ho nabažíte, môžete pokračovať do parku, ktorý je hneď nablízku.
El Retiro Park
El Retiro Park is one of the biggest parks in Madrid and I could spend hours here. When you are walking around you can see a lot of beautiful statues, monuments and there is a cute lake with small boats that makes the atmosphere very romantic. You can find one of the most iconic buildings in Madrid here, Palacio de Cristal. This Crystal Palace is made almost entirely out of glass. It’s surrounded by a lake, that gives you a really nice view and during the sunny day as we got it’s really nice to watch sunshine going through glass walls when you are inside.
El Retiro park je jedným z najväčších v Madride a dalo by sa tu stráviť hodiny. Pri prechádzaní sa cez park môžete vidieť veľa sôch a taktiež je tu milé jazierko s malými loďkami, ktoré vytvárajú romantickú atmosféru. Nachádza sa tu aj jedna z najzvláštnejších budov Madridu, kryštálový palác, ktorý je takmer celý zo skla. Je hneď vedľa jazierka, ktoré poskytuje krásny výhľad a počas slnečných dní môžete pozorovať slnečné lúče prechádzajúce stenami paláca, keď ste vo vnútri.
Real Jardin Botanico
If you haven’t seen enough green, there is Real Jardin Botanico next to the El Retiro Park. It’s a very nice botanical garden with many kinds of flowers, trees and plants, greenhouses and art exhibitions. Plus you can save some money on the entrance if you go on Tuesday after 2 p.m. because at this time the entrance is for free.
Ak ste sa ešte dosť nenabažili zelene, hneď vedľa parku je botanická záhrada Real Jardin Botanico. Pekná záhrada plná kvetov, stromov, rôznych rastlín, je tu aj skleník či budova s umeleckými exhibíciami. A taktiež môžete ušetriť peniažky na vstupnom, ak prídete v utorok po druhej poobede, kedy je vstupné zadarmo.
